  • Filter Efficiency and Beta Ratios of a filter element
The filter rating is divided into a nominal rating and an absolute rating. Filter ratings are an often misunderstood area of contamination control. A nominal rating is an arbitrary micrometer value given to the filter by the manufacturer. These ratings have little to no value. An absolute rating gives the size of the largest particle that will pass through the filter or screen. So absolute ratings are better for representing the effectiveness of a filter over nominal ratings. Beta Rating The best and most commonly used rating in industry is the beta rating. The beta rating comes from the Multipass Method for Evaluating Filtration Performance of a Fine Filter Element (ISO 16889:1999). To test a filter, particle counters accurately measure the size and quantity of upstream particles per known volume of fluid, as well as the size and quantity of particles downstream of the filter. The ratio is defined as the particle count upstream divided by the particle count downstream at the rated particle size. Using the beta ratio, a five-micron filter with a beta 10 rating, will have on average 10 particles larger than five microns upstream of the filter for every one particle five microns or greater downstream. The efficiency of the filter can be calculated directly from the beta ratio because the percent capture efficiency is ((beta-1)/beta) x 100. A filter with a beta of 10 at five microns is thus said to be 90 percent efficient at removing particles five microns and larger. Caution must be exercised when using beta ratios to compare filters because they do not take into account actual operating conditions such as flow surges and changes in temperature. A filter's beta ratio also does not give any indication of its dirt-holding capacity, the total amount of contaminant that can be trapped by the filter throughout its life, nor does it account for its stability or performance over time. Nevertheless, beta ratios are an effective way of gauging the expected performance of a filter.

  • What's the Notch Wire Element? And Application of Notch Wire Elements.
Notch Wire Element is made by winding specially treated stainless steel notch wire around a support frame. The shapes of Notch Wire Elements are cylindrical and conical. The element is filtered through gaps between stainless steel wires. Notch Wire Elements can be cleaned and reused like stainless steel mesh filter element. Filtration accuracy: 10.15.25.30.40.50.60.70.80.100.120.150.180.200.250 microns and above. Filter Material: stainless steel 304.304l.316.316l. Advantage 1. High structural strength 2. The Notch Wire Element can be backwashed or backflushed. Since the filter element has a single-layer structure, the impurities adhering to the element can be easily removed by blowing, and the cleaning effect can be visually checked. 3. Provides 10 times more filtration area than wedge wire screen filter cartridges. Application The Notch Wire Element is suitable for the filtration of high viscosity fluids under high temperature and high pressure conditions. The function is to filter out solid particles in the oil, mainly used for self-cleaning filtration of the ship fuel system and heavy equipment hydraulic system.

  • Hydraulic Filter Media Type
Any fluid power system must use a hydraulic filter. These devices filter out contamination in fluids and keep the system running smoothly. Although most of these environments are closed, the plastic and rubber particles in the wear machine will always fall off, or dust and dirt will enter the circuit. Rusting or other oxidation may occur and harmful compounds may form in the medium. Since more than 85% of system failures are caused by contamination, it is important to have high quality hydraulic filters. The Media Type of Hydraulic Filters, Hydraulic filters come in a variety of materials: stainless steel wire mesh, glass fiber, cellulose paper and 80/20. They may have multiple layers and different backings to meet predetermined performance criteria. Depending on their materials and structure, they may be able to capture surface and/or deep contamination. Look at the different types of hydraulic filters here. 1. Stainless steel wire mesh filters. Due to the limitations of the size and structure of stainless steel wire, such filters cannot filter out very small particles. The main advantage of stainless steel wire mesh filters are that they have a longer service life than other types because they can be cleaned and reused. They are usually used in conjunction with hydraulic oils, coolants and lubricants. 2. Glass Fiber media hydraulic filters. They are made by bonding a microglass fiber material to a resin that is randomly placed into a multilayer composite. Due to the finer weaving and the presence of multiple layers, this type of filter is more effective at capturing fine particulate matter and has a greater dirt holding capacity than a wire mesh filter. They are used in systems that are particularly sensitive to contamination, such as servo valves and piston pumps. 3.Cellulose paper media filter. The cellulose paper hydraulic filter is made of resin impregnated cellulose filter media, then pleated and assembled into a finished product. Although it is not as effective as microglass, it does not have too much dirt, it is relatively inexpensive and can be recycled when it is no longer useful. 4.80/20 media filter. The 80/20 hydraulic filter is made from a cellulose polyester blend that provides better moisture resistance, longer life and lower pressure drop than traditional paper filters. Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to purchase a high-quality hydraulic filter to suit your system's needs to keep it running smoothly and to avoid malfunctions.

  • Visual examination of filter element
Many filtration problems can be identified with a simple visual examination of filter element. Significant aspects include the following:filter element components, seals, pleat condition and filter media. 1.Filter element Components Examine components such as the end caps, center core and outer wrap. 1)If they are damaged, investigate whether damage could have caused the fluid to bypass the filter element. The fluid is not filtered any time fluid bypasses the element. 2)If the components show rust, it is possible that the fluid has water contamination. Water in oil could show up as high, abnormal particle counts. The water will also cause the element go into early bypass, which could result in dirty system oil. 2.Seals There are various seals on an element. The obvious ones are the elastomeric seals on the outsides of the end caps, an epoxy seal (or similar adhesive) between the endcap and the media and another seal along the longitudinal seam. Missing or improper seals provide a leakage path and may explain the increase in particle count. A missing elastomeric seal is a big concern because if left in the housing, it could affect the sealing performance of the next and all future elements. One must examine the housing to make sure seals are not piling up. Take corrective action to prevent any leakage paths created by improper sealing. Upon changing an element, the operator must make sure that the seals on replacement elements and spent elements match. If there are any missing parts, check the parts manual to ensure that the replacement part matches the drawing. After verifying that the replacement is correct, check the housing for the missing part. 3.Pleat Condition Most new elements have properly defined pleat shapes. Pleats should be longitudinal and evenly spaced. Compare the new and used element. Are the pleats straight? If they are wavy or bunched up, it may indicate that the element was subjected to high differential pressure or the flow was fluctuating frequently. In most hydraulic systems, fluctuation in flow is a normal phenomenon. A properly sized filter should not be affected by flow fluctuation. Either condition (high differential pressure drop or flow fluctuation) could allow the housing bypass valve to open frequently and cause the oil to bypass the element, resulting in high particle counts. 4.Filter Media Observe the media to identify the amount of dirt on its surface. If the entire surface is full of contaminant, the filter element was most likely in bypass and the fluid was not filtered. Another sign of trouble can be revealed with an inspection of the media texture. If the old media is appreciably softer than the new media then it is possible that excessive heat or water is present in the system. As explained earlier, water may cause bypass conditions to occur and account for the higher particle counts. The water must be removed to improve the filter life and also to prevent future damage to system components. If the element was subjected to high temperatures, the media may not show obvious signs of degradation but the oil properties may have changed. Oil may have oxidized and particle counts may have risen. From Machinery Lubrication
